Places to visit in North Wales

Snowdonia is in North Wales and forms the Snowdonia National Park and is one of three National Parks in Wales. Over 6 million visitors come to the Park every year making it the third most popular National Park in England & Wales. Over 26,000 people actually live in the park which covers some 838 square miles in area. Much of the park is open or mountainous land but there is also still a lot of active farming going on here.

Snowdonia is divided into four distinct areas:

  • To the North – this is the most popular area for tourists and includes the three highest mountains in Wales – the Snowdonia Mastif, the Carneddau and the Glyderau
  • In the second area you will find the peaks of Moel Siabod, Cnicht, the Moelwynion and also the mountains near Blaenau Ffestiniog
  • The area to the West is not as popular due to its remoteness but includes the Rhinogydd, the Arenig and the Rhobell Fawr
  • Finally to the South you will find the Tarren range, Cadair Idris and the Aran Fawddwy which is the highest mountain south of Snowdon
Naturally Snowdon itself is extremely popular with hikers and can become quite busy on some areas particularly as the Snowdon Mountain Railway runs right to the summit. On the lower regions you will discover some fantastic scenery and walks which tend to be quieter as well. Within the Park there are 1,479 miles of public footpaths and 164 miles of public bridleways.

Of course with all these mountains rains plays a big part in Snowdonia life. There is an average rainfall of some 176 inches of rain each year here making in the wettest spot in the United Kingdom. But don’t let this put you off as if you equip yourself appropriately you will enjoy some truly spectacular scenery.

Spring and Autumn are great times to explore the Park as new life and autumnal colours bring the landscape to life. There are plenty of activities to do here including cycling, walking, sailing and canoeing. Key towns to visit in Snowdonia are Bala, Bangor, Caernafon and Pwllheli.
