Dublin Castle is situated in the heart of historic Dublin, easily accessible by car and public transport, and is a monument to Irish history.
First built in the 13th century the castle has been used as a military fortress, a prison, treasury, and courts of law. Rebuilt in the 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, Dublin castle is now used for important state receptions and Presidential Inaugurations. All of the major historic events in Ireland have involved Dublin Castle including the Easter 1916 Rebellion.
There is much to see at this castle including The Undercroft, The state Apartment, The Garda (police) Museum, the Chester Beathy Library and The Chapel Royal.
The Chester Library features the Silk Road Cafe and in the Lower Castle Yard next to The Dublin Castyle Gift Shop is The Castle Vaults Bistro.
Guided tours of Dublin Castle are available.
Please note that Dublin Castle can be closed at short notice for Government Business and The State Apartments may be closed occasionally for State functions.
