Edinburgh Castle - Accommodation & Information
Edinburgh Castle, sits proudly from its lofty position on the volcanic Castle Rock, overlooking the skyline of the city of Edinburgh in Scotland. The castle is Scotland's second most visited tourist attraction and is currently looked after by Historic Scotland. The castle has been home to many garrisons over the years and is still home to a military presence today albeit a largely ceremonial one. Of course one of the most famous events that takes place every year at the castle is the Edinburgh Military Tattoo. This event attracts over 217,000 people from all over the world who come to see the fantastic military show put on including marching bands and the exhilerating races.
Over the centuries the castle has suffered from a number of attacks with much of the building before the 16th Century having been destroyed by artillery bombardment. The one exception to this is St Margaret's Chapel, dating back to the 12th Century, which is the oldest surviving building in Edinburgh. If you are visiting the castle about 1300 then you will hear the sound of the "one o'clock gun" which is fired every day except Sunday.
There are shops and two restaurants inside the castle grounds. Take your camera as the views from the Castle are fantastic.
