Giants Causeway - County Antrim
The mystical Giants Causeway, located in the north of County Antrim, attracts over half a million visitors every year. The Giant’s Causeway is a UNESCO World Heritage site - a striking basalt rock formation on the North Coast that is a must for everyone. It is situated close to the popular seaside resorts of Portrush (which has a vibrant night life) and Portstewart.
Visitors come here to explore and take in the amazing coastline here an in particular to see the incredibly unique symmetric rocks that look like stepping stones. The causeway will not fail to inspire you and to leave you wondering how this scene was created. This is one of Europe's most exciting coastlines and is set against the backdrop of the dramatic and sometine ferocious Atlantic Ocean.
With so many people visiting this coastal area a visitor centre opened in 1986 and in the same year the Giants Causeway was given World Heritage Site status. The National Trust are responsible for maintaining the area and have provided a National Trust Shop and Tea Shop to look after the many tourists. There is also a bus service which runs from the visitor centre to the Giants Causeway and operates at the same time as the opening hours of the centre. There is a tourist information office here as well as a Bureau de Change and souvenir shop. The Causeway Visitor Centre
is open daily all year round and can be found on the cliff top 1 km from the site. The centre provides a lot of information about the area as well as a twelve minute audio-visual presentation available in 5 European languages enabling you to discover more about the history and myths about the Giants Causeway.
You can get to the Giants Causeway by either foot, taking the long circular walk following the cliff path to the Shepherd's Steps and back via the Giants Causeway (approx 2 miles walk) or by bus using the seasonal Ulsterbus service (buses accessible for people with disabilities.)
