Activity details
National Seal Sanctuary - Helston, Cornwall
Ken Jones started the National Seal Sanctuary in 1958 when a baby seal washed up on the beach at St.Agnes. Starting with just one pool he soon became known and was receiving more and more rescued seal pups.
In 1975 Ken moved the sanctuary to Gweek and has built up the number of pools he has to cope with the increasing number of pools. Today the sanctuary has a number of pools and also a specially designed hospital. Most of the seals that are rescued are able to be rehabilatated but for some the move back to the wild is just too much and they remain here as permanent guests.
There are many types of seals here including grey and common seals, fur seals, californian and patagonian sea lions and even an arctic hooded seal. As well as seals there are also otters, ponies, sheep and goats here.
The Seal Sanctuary is situated in the Helford Estuary close to the scenic village of Gweek. A normal season will see over 40 pups rescued by the sanctuary. Come and learn all about these lovely animals.
