Warwick Castle - A great day out
The medieval Warwick Castle is located in the town of Warwick in the county of Warwickshire in the west Midlands. The castle was built by William the Conqueror in 1068 and remained a fort until the early in the 17th Century. About this time Sir Faulke Greville converted the castle into a country house whose family became the Earls of Warwick until 1978. At the same time the castle grounds were turned into gardens.
The castle sits in a prominent position high up overlooking a bend in the River Avon. In 1978 the castle was bought by the Tussauds Group and opened up as a tourist attraction and is protected as a Grade 1 listed building.
Warwick Castle is also home to the world's largest working siege engine. The trebuchet (large catapult) is 18 metres tall and weighs 22 metric tonnes. The machine takes eight men to load and is able to throw projectiles as far as 300 metres. The trebuchet broke the world record in 2006 and hurled a projectile weighing 13 kilograms a distance of 249 metres. You can see the amazing machine on the banks of
the River Avon below the castle.
