Activity details
Whipsnade Zoo
Whipsnade Zoo is located in the Chiltern Hills just outside Dunstable in Bedfordshire which is north of London. The Zoo is set in 600 acres of wonderful parkland and is home to more than 2,500 animals.
The Zoo is best reached by car and is easily accessed via the M1 using either Junction 9 or Junction 12. The Zoo is well sign posted and there is a large car park just opposite the Zoo. Of course you can take your car into the Zoo and drive around but to be honest it is just as easy to walk around and good exercise!.
As you come through the entrance and pay, guide maps are provided free so that you can plan your route around the Zoo. There are also places to buy a coffee or a hot snack as you come through the entrance. The guide map will provide you with information on where all the different animals are around the Zoo as well as important things like toilets and other refreshments. The Zoo has an excellent variety of animals and frequently has a number of new born animals. Particular favourites are the elephants, cheetah and hippopotamus. As you walk around the Zoo there are a number of animals that run free such as wallabies and small mara which are very cute.
The Zoo also has a childrens farm where animals such as rabbits, goats, sheep and small ponies can be touched in safety. Next to the animal farm there is also a childrens play area. The Zoo also has a small train which takes you around part of the wider extremeties of the park and is a great treat for the kids.
On your way out there is a souvenir shop where there is a variety of Whipsnade gifts that you can buy to take home as a reminder of your trip.
As with many attractions the Zoo does get busier at weekends and also especially on bank holiday weekends.
