Activity details
Take the glass conservation tour and see the Bedern Glazers studio where you can have a close up view of medieval stained glass under construction.
Those who are fit and brave enough can climb the 275 steps to the top of the central tower, well worth the effort as once you reach the top the view of the city of York and its ancient streets is amazing.
Going down into the Undercoft is like stepping back in time. When the Central Tower became in grave danger of collapse in the late 1960’s work was done to shore up its foundations and it was then that workers found remains of buildings that once existed on this site.
The Chapter House is a stunning room and must be viewed, designed in the Decorated Gothic style and octagonal in shape, building of it began in 1260 and was completed in 1286. Some of the Minsters finest carvings are on the walls with most of them dating from 1270-1280. The Chapter House is still used now by the Dean and Chapter as a meeting place.
After viewing the wonderful cathedral why not take a break in the tea rooms which are housed in the 15th century St. Williams College and try some of the appetizing snacks and light lunches on offer.
