East Coast and Midlands
East Coast & Midlands
This is the region of Ireland that gave way to the nickname "The Emerald Isle". The region stretches from the Cooley peninsula in Louth to the north all the way to the mountains and beaches of Wicklow on the East Coast. In the middle of the region are the low stretches of swathing grass gently undulating and only broken by the villages and towns found to the east. This region benefits from some of Ireland's most modern roads and train network. The area is steeped in history going back to the times of the High Kings of Ireland and at Clonmacnoise, in Offaly, you will find one of the most famous monastic sites where the last line of the High Kings is buried. At Newgrange, in Meath you must pay a visit to the passage grave which is even older that the famous
pyramids but to day has been restored to its former glory.
A good place to base yourself is one of the bigger towns such as Dundalk and Drogheda from where you can explore this region properly. These old towns offer great accommodation and provide all the necessary amenities to make your stay and enjoyable one.
To the south of this region is Kildare County which epitomises Ireland's horse racing culture. Here you will find the famous Curragh Racecourse and the Irish National Stud which is well worth a visit.
Last but by no means least is Wicklow known as the Garden of Ireland. Being only a short trip from Dublin this area has lovely golden beaches, hidden valleys and rugged mountains. If you climb the Wicklow Mountains you should have an excellent view over to the east and also across to Dublin.
