Shannon
Shannon
The Shannon Region is named after the Shannon River which is 214 miles long and is in fact the longest river in the British Isles. In fact the whole Shannon area is dominated by water and unsurprisingly is extremely popular with fishermen. Traveling along the waterways is a perfect way to cruise about and take in the breathtaking beauty of the surrounding landscape. The Atlantic coastline of the Shannon region is equally spectacular, particularly at the Cliffs of Moher, and it is possible to cruise the Shannon and follow it all the way back to its source - some 500 miles distance.
Limerick City is one of those places where curiously everybody seems to know each other. Limerick's history goes back many years and has been famed in song and story. We recommend you pay a visit to King John's Castle and take in the panoramic views of the city.
Another popular spot is the Burren National Park which is found in County Clare. This is a place of mystery and beauty and steeped in history. Just nearby are the famous Aillwee Caves which is one of the most popular attractions in Ireland. Other attractions are Bunratty Castle and Folk Park which provide a real sense of what it was like to live centuries ago.Bunratty Castle is one of the most complete medievel castles in Ireland. Folk Park is a recreation of 19th Century Ireland set in 26 acres of grounds including a recreated village street, farmhouses. a watermill and much much more. Look out for the medieval banquets which are held here all year round.
Overall this region is a real break from city life and combines a laid back way of life with wonderful natural attractions. As always expect a warm welcome from the locals.
