Argyll and Bute

Argyll and Bute is a fantastic place to visit – especially if you are aiming to miss the crowds and enjoy some of the best kept secrets in Scotland. The area of Argyll and Bute is vast and includes islands, mountains, and has over 3000 miles of wonderful coastline.

There are many places of interest and a great range of accommodation throughout the region. There are also many great places to visit during a day trip and these include, The Mull of Kintyre, Cowal Peninsula, Oban, Fort William, Loch Lomond and the Islands of Mull, Iona, Islay, Jura, Colonsay and Bute.

Oban has developed into Scotland's most popular west-coast holiday town and is the seafood capital of Scotland. Beyond Oban lie the islands of the Inner Hebrides: Kerrera, island of Lismore, majestic Mull and the granite mountains of the Morvern peninsula. Beyond them, are the islands of Iona, Coll, Colonsay and Tiree.

Not to miss is Tobermory on the Isle of Mull.  Tobermory was originally built as a fishing port in the late 18th century and is now the main village on Mull. The village has brightly painted buildings along the main street to the pier and has a busy little harbour. Don’t miss out on the fish and chips but do watch out for the seagulls. You can easily drive around the island in a day and with it’s beautiful and diverse scenery it really is a must.

Inveraray is situated on the banks of Loch Fyne and almost all of the buildings are whitewashed. Inveraray is a favourite stopping off point if you are on your way to the Mull of Kintyre or if you are heading north to Dalmally and Oban.

Loch Fyne is 41 miles in length and is the longest sea loch in Scotland. You can find dolphins, seals and at times, basking sharks.  Lock Fyne is very popular with anglers, sailors and divers and there are many wonderful dive sites and it is also possible to dive almost all year round.

The Isle of Bute is less than two hours from the city of Glasgow and is 15 miles long by approximately 4 miles wide. The main town in Bute is Rothesay.
There are many attractions which include The Argyll Forest, numerous gardens and parks, castles, museums, churches and ruins.  There is also a wide range of activities to suit everyone and includes walking, golf, fishing, cycling, climbing, diving and of course island hopping.

The main ferry operator in Argyll & Bute is Caledonian MacBrayne, and includes services from the mainland to Bute, Gigha, Islay, Mull and Tiree.
