Lothian

Lothian is home to Edinburgh and although Edinburgh is not the largest city in Scotland, it is the capital. This extremely picturesque city lies on the east coast close to the Firth of Forth and the North Sea. The city itself has over 4,500 listed buildings and some lovely examples of Georgian architecture. UNESCO designated the Old Town and New Town areas of Edinburgh as World Heritage Sites in 1995. There is a rough population of 472,000 people living in Edinburgh with over 1 million overseas visitors coming to see the many attractions on offer.

Beyond the city, the Lothian countryside provides a beautiful setting and the area is steeped in history, filled with castles, great houses and battle sites. The primary attraction is the village of Roslin – 7 miles south of Edinburgh city centre. You will find the richly decorated late-Gothic Rosslyn Chapel which featured in the blockbuster film and book – ‘The Da Vinci Code’.

For things to do in this regions, try the Edinburgh Butterfly and Insect World in Lasswadeor try one of the many parks such as: Dalkeith Country Park; Almondell and Calderwood, Beecraigs and Polkemmet Country Parks; or the vast Central Scotland Forest and the breezy peaks of the Bathgate Hills. Also, to visit is the ruined royal palace at Linlithgow.
