Western Isles
Western Isles - The Outer Hebrides
The Outer Hebrides is also known as the Western Isles and has more than two hundred islands with only a handful of which are actually inhabited.
On the islands you will find different cultures, traditions and heritage. The Hebrides remains the heartland of Gaelic Culture with the language spoken by the vast majority of the islanders. Lewis in the north is the largest island and its main town is Stornoway. Harris is home to the world-famous Harris Tweed.
Barra has a beach which doubles as a landing strip for the flights from the mainland.
The Hebrides is an ideal place for walkers and cyclers. It is also a great place for anglers – both sea and fresh water.
The deserted Island of St Kilda is a World Heritage Site. The island can be reached by day boat subject to weather conditions.
